M2M Technology Advances Healthcare System

Guest post by LeadingQuest.
In this time and age of digital technology, changes in almost every aspect of human life are inevitable. Technology in itself is constantly evolving everyday. Inventions, new and better products are introduced to the market every now and then. The Healthcare system is no exception.
Although, most medical equipments today still work as individual units, and medical practitioners and technicians still need to collaborate to generate a report on one specific aspect of a patient’s health. Often times, they would have to manually operate systems, devices and machines to generate the results. This whole tedious process does not only entail a lot of work, but requires a significant amount of time.
Fortunately, the healthcare industry has realized this inefficiency in the system and is slowly adapting to new technologies that can incredibly improve healthcare. Healthcare providers are now turning to Machine-to-machine technology, also known as E-Health, to provide more cost-efficient, reliable and enhanced services to their patients. As a result of the rapidly escalating cost of medical expenses, as well as Health Care reforms, particularly in the US and other countries adapting to a similar structure, medical providers and facilities decided to strengthen the role of connected health devices in delivering better healthcare services.
A report from Machina Research examined the impact of the possible adoption of technology that utilizes machine to machine connectivity to the healthcare sector, its viable outcomes and implications. Author of the new Sector Report Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communications in Healthcare 2013-23 and Machina Research Principal Analyst, Andy Castonguay said that:
“In a country like the United States, with healthcare spending nearing 20% of national GDP, M2M technology may well provide the single most promising approach to expanding health care services in a cost effective manner.”
“While the cost dynamics of healthcare are a key factor driving innovation in the field, connected health devices and applications are also proving to be a key element in improving patient engagement and health.”
LeadingQuest CEO, Clovis Lacerda agrees with Mr. Castonguay in this view. According to Mr. Lacerda, M2M Technology is the best way to advance the healthcare system and eliminate problems such as long waiting periods. It would also be very cost-efficient for healthcare providers and can save them millions of dollars. Providing M2M Healthcare Solutions is one of the primary services that LeadingQuest and Parlacom Brazil offers to its clients. These are customized M2M E-Health solutions and applications that have been effectively used in care facilities. He further mentioned that Parlacom Brazil is enhancing their services, and is looking into investing more in this area to increase sales force.
From the same report from Machina Research, M2M connected devices for the healthcare sector is anticipated to hit 847 billion by 2023. In this report, North America will be the largest, reaching 386 million connections, followed by Europe and developed countries in Asia Pacific. And the Healthcare industry will generate a total revenue of $90.9 billion from M2M technology.

Samsung Launches Major Digital Health Initiative

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today launched a bold initiative aimed at directing the resources and innovation of the global technology industry toward empowering individuals to better manage their own health and wellness.
The Samsung Digital Health Initiative is based on open hardware and software platforms that will accelerate the development of advanced sensors, algorithms, and data collection and analysis.
At an event at San Francisco’s SFJAZZ Center today, Samsung’s Strategy and Innovation Center (SSIC) team demonstrated its open platform in a wearable wristband form factor, showing how devices based on this reference-design “blueprint” could be used to track measurements such as heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure. The company also demonstrated its open software architecture and how it could be used to collect data from a variety of sources, aggregate it and display it in a format allowing consumers to better understand what is taking place within their bodies.
The open platforms, combined with agreements like the one recently announced by Samsung and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to validate new technologies for personal health and wellness, are designed to help entrepreneurs bring innovative products to market more quickly.
“Samsung’s Digital Health Initiative provides an exciting opportunity for the brightest minds in the technology world to come together to develop the products that will, for the first time, put individuals in the driver’s seat in understanding their own health and wellness,” said Young Sohn, president and chief strategy officer, Device Solutions, Samsung Electronics.
“At a time when healthcare spending is at record levels and when the number of people over the age of 60 worldwide is expected to exceed more than 1.2 billion by 2025, digital health is an incredibly important area for innovation. We believe this initiative is an essential first step and we invite developers and partners across the globe to join us in creating the technologies of the future that will help make people’s lives healthier.”
Technology Highlights

Open Hardware Platform: Samsung’s Simband is an open hardware reference design for wearable technology, capable of integrating the most advanced sensing technologies in the world. Simband is being designed in a modular way, allowing for innovation in areas like battery life, form factor and noninvasive sensor technology. Innovators are invited to use the reference platform to create and contribute their own advanced sensors, algorithms and other technologies. Simband is a reference design Samsung and third-parties will use to develop products. It will not be sold commercially. This approach is intended to lead to the creation of ecosystems for hardware and algorithms that will enable new technology to be easily incorporated into finished products.
Open Software Architecture: The Samsung Architecture for Multimodal Interactions (SAMI) will be a cloud-based open software platform capable of bringing together diverse data from a variety of sources for analysis. It will allow devices and sensors to securely store data in the cloud regardless of the source’s format or structure. SAMI’s job is to make more information available, to break open information silos and give applications and services access to large amounts of data to provide better insights. Under Samsung’s approach, SAMI will allow data to be controlled by the individual generating it and not by third-parties, so that personal health data can be better protected.

The combination of Simband-designed sensor technologies and algorithms and SAMI-based software will take individual understanding of the body to a new level – for the first time giving voice to a deeper understanding of personal health and wellness. In addition, through the development of new sensing technologies and software, it’s possible that entirely new and previously unimagined insights into health and wellness could be generated.
Dr. Michael Blum, associate vice chancellor for informatics at UCSF, said:
“Our bodies have always had something to say but now, with advanced sensors, algorithms and software, we will finally be able to tune into what the body is telling us.”
“Validation of these technologies will improve the quality of data collected and help advance the ability to bring new products to market quickly. UCSF is pleased to play an important role in this effort to focus increased technology resources on digital health.”
To support its Digital Health Initiative, Samsung today also announced the Samsung Digital Health Challenge, a $50 million investment fund dedicated to innovative start-ups and technologies in the digital health area. The goal of the fund is to stimulate creative new approaches to digital health and Samsung’s open platforms. Additional information about the Samsung Digital Health Challenge may be found at www.samsung.com/ssic.

Wearable Technology: The Convergence of Fashion and Technology

By LeadingQuest
With the M2M technology rapidly evolving and wearable electronics is taking their significant place in this process, the convergence of wearable technology and consumer electronics is inevitable.
Wearables has greatly influenced consumer electronics market, driven by the increase in demand for electronic devices that help improve fitness and health.
These wearable electronics are generating much success in the healthcare sector as they can collect critical information from the patients which will not only benefit the patient itself but health care professionals and providers. The most common wearable health electronics in the market today are smart wristbands, smart watches that help monitor patient’s heart rate. Other more advance inventions such as electronic contact lenses that has microchips and glucose sensors to monitor blood sugar levels, and biostamp temporary tattoos used to monitor patients remotely without the hassle of being strapped to a machine for hours. Imagine how these devices has altered the face of healthcare. Wearable technology and electronics are, with no doubt, remarkably reshaping the near future.
But what does the fashion industry have to say to this? Pretty much, the fashion industry dictates the trends in how people look. However, the fashion industry is now slowly adopting a new concept that people will start wearing clothes not just to look good but to communicate. For people who loves to be fashionable and trendy and not necessary fitness-crazed, wearables such as Samsung Galaxy Gear Fit may be a good way to keep up with the trends in wearable electronics. Unquestionable, the fashion industry not only dictates the trends, it also dictates the consumers’ desires and their spending habit, thus the new smart fabric technFology market has emerged, where smart textiles are now becoming widely recognized.
However, there are still issues on its full integration as both fashion and electronics need to avoid getting into a compromise, sacrificing aesthetics and functionality. Ultimately, a product has to look fashionable and cutting edge for consumers to really buy it.
Clovis Lacerda, CEO of LeadingQuest and Parlacom Brazil, when asked about the company’s stand on this fast growing trend, said:
“Let’s face it, fashion trends are being digitized while gadgets are getting more fashionable. The convergence is inevitable since the already thin line between technology and fashion is getting thinner with various wearable technologies emerging in the market, giving not just consumers the options on what to buy, but providing developers and providers as well a much wider scope and area to expand as far as increasing sales force on vertical markets is concerned.”
“That is why we are looking at expanding on those markets in the very near future.” He further added.
Although, the fashion industry has made quite a statement on the possibility of converging fashion and technology with Nicole Scherzinger’s twitter dress and Black Eyed Peas members wearing LEDs and OLEDs on their costumes at “The Beginning” Tour in Paris, the evolution of wearable technology has just begun…

The Internet of Pigs is set to fly

1248 Internet of Things technology helps General Alert improve animal health and provide early warning of disease.
General Alert (GA), a pioneer in the use of sensors and monitoring technology on farms, is working with Internet of Things (IoT) specialist 1248 to improve the welfare of pigs, poultry and other livestock and provide early warning of transmitted diseases. GA is using 1248’s new Geras IoT database and publishing solution to collect data from multiple sensors including temperature, drinking water flow and animal feed rate, humidity, CO2 concentration, ammonia and pH. GA even uses in-vivo RFID and temperature tags planted in pigs, effectively turning a pig into a ‘thing’ on the Internet of Things.
This will be the first time agricultural environments and the behaviour of animals have been measured on this scale and in such detail, to manage productivity, health and wellbeing and improve operational efficiency. And by monitoring on a national and international level, the technology will be able to provide early warning of diseases such as foot-and-mouth, which can cause devastating livestock and financial loss.
Like most Internet of Things solutions, the GA system uses a very large number of sensors, each collecting thousands or millions of readings via the mobile phone network or internet, which need to be stored and queried to provide meaningful and useful information. For example, a change in drinking behaviour could indicate illness or source of animal stress that can be resolved quickly.
“Rising global population and standards of living are increasing the pressure on food-animal production, which leads to an increased requirement to manage animal productivity, health and wellbeing effectively,” said Chris Dodge, IT Director at General Alert.
“Sensors, electronics and communications technologies have reached a price point that is making it possible to deploy IoT systems that deliver real commercial benefit and Geras is a core building block of our solution. We are already working closely with veterinary, agricultural research and farm management companies and looking to expand the range of applications.”
Geras is a generic, scalable IoT service – a piece of infrastructure which solves a common IoT problem based on open standards. It accepts data trickling in from many devices, stores it and then allows applications to quickly answer high-level questions from it.
“Geras is designed to allow companies like General Alert to focus on what they do best – in this case, developing and deploying livestock technology,” said Pilgrim Beart, CEO at 1248.
“Companies looking to rapidly harness the opportunities presented by the Internet of Things need to partner with experienced providers who understand how to build scalable architectures and are committed to open standards.”
As GA’s Chris Dodge added: “1248’s founders are well known in the IoT area, with a track record of successful companies, including sensor related work, which gave us the confidence to base aspects of our infrastructure on Geras.”

Whistle’s New GPS Capabilities and the First Network Dedicated to Internet of Things to Change the Landscape of Wireless Connectivity

Pet Technology Company Teams Up with SIGFOX to Ensure Dog Owners Never Lose Their Pets.
Whistle, the makers of the leading pet health and activity monitor, today introduced WhistleGPS, the next generation of its line of pet tech products. This device and connected mobile app will help ensure that dog owners in the U.S. can always find their pets. Harnessing the U.S. deployment of the SIGFOX network, the first wireless network dedicated to the internet of things, Whistle aims to prevent the loss of the roughly 10 million family pets that go missing annually.
“WhistleGPS offers pet owners peace of mind that they’ll never lose their best friend,” said Ben Jacobs, CEO of Whistle.
“Until now, GPS devices on the market simply didn’t make sense for most dog owners. Subscription costs are high, battery life is short, and products are too big for most breeds to even wear. By leveraging the SIGFOX network, we’re offering a GPS device that pet owners can use effortlessly, and be proud to put on their dog’s collar.”
WhistleGPS is a sleek device that attaches to a dog’s collar to collect and categorize key information, including location, activity and rest. Pet owners can use WhistleGPS to make sure their dogs are getting the right amount of daily activity and to pinpoint their dog’s exact location from their smartphone.
Unlike other GPS products on the market, WhistleGPS addresses three key challenges for location monitoring, including:

Size – At roughly the size of a silver dollar (16 grams), WhistleGPS is less than 1/3 the size of other available trackers, making it the smallest and lowest profile pet monitoring device on the market. This means more dogs of varying sizes will be able to wear the device comfortably.
Battery life – Leveraging brand new low-energy wireless network capabilities to communicate location, WhistleGPS is able to provide 2x the battery life than currently possible in other devices. This allows people to use their device for at least one week before needing to recharge the battery, for a better experience.
Affordability – Bypassing expensive wireless providers and connecting to the new internet of things ecosystem allows WhistleGPS to keep cost of subscriptions down to 1/2 current price of GPS services.

As the collaboration with Whistle demonstrates, the new low-energy network with SIGFOX addresses the widespread need for new wireless communication solutions. Current options for mobile connectivity only offer close-range syncing via Bluetooth and WiFi, or cumbersome and expensive 3G and 4G wireless systems. The introduction of the SIGFOX on-demand wireless network in the U.S. – timed for the end of this year – bridges the gap between the two current offerings and will unleash new opportunities for addressing connected home solutions, smart city grids, valuable asset tracking and much more.
Ludovic Le Moan, CEO of SIGFOX, said:
“WhistleGPS is a perfect example of how low-energy systems like ours open the door to innovation, especially within the internet of things sector.”
“As we approach the sunset date of older 2G networks, more products will be forced to evolve and iterate in months and years to come while enabling entirely new ones like WhistleGPS. The U.S. deployment of our wireless system is an exciting opportunity to usher in the new wave of connectivity and invention.”
Available for pre-order May 21 – 28, 2014
WhistleGPS is available for pre-order from May 21-28, 2014 for $49 (SRP $129) online at www.Whistle.com through a limited time offering powered by Crowdtilt Open. WhistleGPS will ship starting summer 2015.
