Ericsson Establishes IOT Patent Licensing Platform
Platform will operate as a separate company headed by Kasim Alfalahi, previously Ericsson’s CIPO and SVP
3 February 2016 – Ericsson today announced an initiative to accelerate the development of Internet of Things (IoT) by establishing a platform for licensing of standardized technology to device manufacturers. The platform, operated by an independent company, will adopt a revenue sharing model for contributing companies and receive a mandate to license on behalf of the joining patent holders, aiming to simplify access to standardized technology.
This will be an additional go to market model for Ericsson, continuing to build on its IPR & Licensing business strategy to secure a fair return on its R&D investment. Ericsson will make its patents for relevant technologies available through the platform.
The platform is intended to be an efficient marketplace for businesses' technology licensing needs, offering flat per unit licensing fees for the various verticals that reflect how much connectivity technology their devices use.
The new platform will be headed by Kasim Alfalahi (above), who will leave his current role as Chief Intellectual Property Officer and Head of IPR & Licensing at Ericsson.
Alfalahi says: "We are initiating this market place following discussions with both wireless industry players and key players in industry verticals. This platform shows Ericsson's and my personal commitment to provide a solution that works to the benefit of all parts of the ecosystem."
According to the latest edition of Ericsson Mobility Report, around 28 billion connected devices are expected by 2021, of which 15 billion will be connected machine to machine and consumer electronics devices.
Hans Vestberg, President and CEO, Ericsson, said: "Under Kasim's leadership Ericsson has established a leading position in the IPR licensing market. As more and more industries embrace connectivity and the Internet of Things, it is crucial that essential technology is accessible and that innovators continue to get fair returns on R&D investments. With his experience Kasim is the right person to drive this exciting new opportunity to accelerate market development."

On-Ramp Wireless and Meterlinq Deploy IoT Network in Italy
24 June 2015 – On-Ramp Wireless, a leading provider of long-range connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT), today announced it has partnered with MeterLinq srl, a provider of secure telemetry and remote-management infrastructure for smart metering and smart grid services, to deploy the first wide-area IoT network in Italy. The network, initially built for Italy’s leading natural gas operator Amgas, will provide connectivity for smart metering of natural gas and other industrial applications throughout the region.
The network integrates On-Ramp Wireless’ RPMA® (Random Phase Multiple Access) technology into the MeterLinq MeterNet® solution to deliver comprehensive connectivity for even the most challenging of environments. Connectivity options such as cellular are ill-equipped to provide cost-effective, reliable coverage and data capacity to utility assets that may be underground, widely distributed or in hard-to-reach locations. The innovative RPMA technology delivers proven, industry-leading wireless coverage and capacity and operates in the globally license-free 2.4 GHz band.
“Together with On-Ramp Wireless, MeterLinq can equip Amgas and other energy providers with reliable, scalable, smart metering for critical utility applications,” said Massimo Cesaro, chief technology officer, MeterLinq (above). “These solutions need to be deployed now, not only because of the immense value they offer to energy providers, but because the Italian government mandated all natural gas meters be transitioned to smart meters by 2020. Realistically, energy providers need to deploy solutions now if they hope to comply with the mandates by the issued deadline.”
The MeterLinq RPMA network will initially be deployed to support gas metering, and will extend to water metering in the next phase. A unique aspect of the RPMA network is that it can be used to serve multiple applications and customers once deployed at little to no additional cost. This will allow the current network to seamlessly support a range of industrial applications in the future.
“This latest deployment of the RPMA network is validation for the reliability and performance of On-Ramp Wireless’ technology, especially in supporting multi-application IoT networks,” said Jason Wilson, senior vice president, business development, On-Ramp Wireless. “We’re proud to further extend our global presence and work with MeterLinq to equip industrial IoT users with the connectivity they require.”

On-Ramp Wireless and WellAware Collaborate on Digital Oilfield
21 May 2015 – On-Ramp Wireless, a leading provider of long-range connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT), and WellAware, a provider of full-stack solution for oilfield monitoring and optimization, today announced their collaboration on the creation of a wide-area IoT communications network. With this network, WellAware and On-Ramp Wireless provide coverage for over 55,000 square miles of the most active US oil and gas fields, representing more than 50 percent of total US production.
The partnership integrates On-Ramp Wireless’ RPMA® (Random Phase Multiple Access) technology into WellAware’s solutions, delivering the highest data availability at the lowest cost for oil and gas operators. The On-Ramp Wireless RPMA technology provides low-power, wide-area connectivity and secure, acknowledged, two-way communications in this challenging environment. WellAware’s solutions collect, manage, and analyze this information to help operators reduce expenses, minimize downtime and ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
Given the remote locations of many oil wells, cellular networks often fall short of providing necessary data coverage. Satellite monitoring is cost-prohibitive for frequent polling rates, and 900 MHz networks require a high upfront CAPEX and are plagued by interference issues. The WellAware RPMA Network, already pre-built over the key oil and gas shale plays, delivers over 99.9 percent data availability and supports over 5,000 radios per access point, making it the lowest total cost solution available.
“Our customers have a tremendous need to tap into the intelligence provided by the digital oilfield,” said Matt Harrison, founder and CEO, WellAware (above). “Through this partnership with On-Ramp Wireless, we can ensure our solutions provide the highest data availability at the lowest cost, enabling our customers to more effectively compete in the current economic environment.”
“The oil and gas industry demands an ecosystem of devices and sensors that can deliver remote wireless monitoring of oilfield and pipeline assets,” said Kevin Hell, president and CEO, On-Ramp Wireless. “Working with WellAware, we’re providing the needed network coverage, security and data capacity to enable IoT solutions that drastically improve operational efficiency.”
