Novatel Wireless Introduces Next Generation N4A CMS Service Delivery Platform for M2M

N4A CMS 3.0 addresses a number of challenges faced by the industry today. Carriers and MVNOs are looking to offer a standardized platform that can enable customized vertical market solutions for both large enterprises and SMB/SMEs. Fortune 1000 enterprises are looking for a standardized and systematic way to connect and bring remote, previously unconnected assets into existing enterprise networks to improve business operations or build new revenue streams. N4A CMS 3.0 solves these challenges by providing an enterprise-grade SDP that can enable vertical market solutions and which is scalable to support customers ranging from small enterprises to tier-one carriers.

The N4A CMS platform improves ease of application deployment, reduces development time and delivers efficient operation and device communication in a single, robust platform. "Many of our enterprise CMS customers have chosen N4A CMS for our unique approach and ease of on-premise integration into their existing application and IT systems," says Rob Hadley, CMO, Novatel Wireless. "Irrespective of our customers' preference for on-premise server deployment or a cloud based option, the new N4A CMS 3.0 platform supports both and is the basis for tomorrow's M2M services delivery and application management platform," Mr. Hadley continues. "We believe that our CMS platform will drive innovation and enable new services and we are excited to be launching this next generation platform to help our customers advance in the M2M space."

The N4A CMS offers easy-to-use system administrative tools and interfaces allowing customers to automate processes and make device management and service enablement simple. The standards-based services and tools include:

  • Collect and process data from multiple wireless devices
  • Integrate data collected into existing applications and IT systems
  • Manage wireless device provisioning, deployment and updating
  • Secure, remote access to control and manage assets
  • Custom report and map assets

"Software platforms, such as Novatel Wireless' N4A CMS middleware, are crucial for continuing to make progress in moving from expensive, customized, siloed M2M deployments — to less expensive, standardized and interconnected M2M deployments," says Sam Lucero, Research Director at ABI Research.  "As application developers and enterprise customers become more aware of, and make use of, such platforms, development timeframes will decrease, costs will decrease and application developers will spend their time focused on their unique areas of differentiation."

Novatel Wireless' M2M offering consists of 2G, 3G and 4G intelligent modules and integrated platforms. Additional services can also be provided with the combination of the N4A CMS software. These solutions support reliable wireless connections for verticals including utility, security, tele-health, transportation, tracking, automotive and telemetry markets.

KORE Enhances International M2M Offering with Intelligent Pricing Architecture

KORE introduced IntelliRate to its North American customer base in 2010 as the industry's first auto-adjusting, elastic tariff structure designed to account for the considerable ebb and flow of device usage, a hallmark of machine communications. For example, a particular device in a user's network may be exception-based and have no need to transmit for a period of weeks or months, while another may have the task of initiating a monthly data backup process, creating a high-volume burst of data at regular intervals. IntelliRate accounts for these variabilities and automatically applies the appropriate data rate according to each device's actual usage on a monthly basis, with zero customer intervention required.

"When evaluating M2M network service providers, KORE stood out due to its global coverage footprint, especially in key European markets, as we roll out our 'Smart Grid for Waste & Recycling™' worldwide," said Michael Feldman, VP of Engineering, BigBelly Solar. "Given the central role that information plays in our System, including the need for reliable communications between our distributed stations and network command center, a wireless partner of the highest order is required and we are very pleased to be working with KORE in such a capacity."

KORE designates multiple rate steps, based on a combination of 10 tiers of data usage and seven geographic coverage areas.

"We're seeing a tremendous amount of activity on a global level and understand that our customers need to scale their businesses while keeping a critical eye toward total cost of ownership," said Alex Brisbourne, president and COO, KORE. "We've worked diligently to bring together high-reliability networks and a business management platform optimized for global M2M devices and service delivery, while also focusing on tariff management, which was cited repeatedly by customers as a critical component. Now that our global IntelliRate program is in place we can proudly claim, together with our operator partners, the most comprehensive M2M service delivery platform for global enterprises."

KORE Global IntelliRate is available through the KORE carrier partnership with Vodafone Group. Vodafone enables device connectivity in more than 170 countries worldwide via a single SIM.

While all international M2M services customers will see returns from KORE IntelliRate, it was designed with a number of use case scenarios in mind, including:

  • Highly seasonal operations, such as agriculture, which combine periods of high-volume data usage followed by dormant or very low use periods;
  • Devices that are highly irregular in data usage and are not predictable in terms of high and low data use periods;
  • Devices that require periodic, over-the-air firmware updates; and
  • Devices that may be highly mobile, spanning countries and continents, where in some areas the customer prefers that the devices not connect in order to save on wireless network service expenses.

To further control TCO, KORE SIMs can be provisioned to only connect to specific global service area networks. Additionally, KORE SIMs are configured to connect to the most cost-effective networks, whenever possible. If a customer chooses to allow a SIM to connect to a more expensive network, the SIM will regularly look for a preferred, lower-cost network. These additional steps enable customers to manage costs and reduce risk, while delivering the broadest coverage in each country.

Inmarsat Selects Hughes to Develop New BGAN M2M Terminal

Hughes, a market leader in the M2M sector, will develop the new 9502 BGAN M2M terminal by building on its successful 9201-M2M platform.  The BGAN M2M service will offer an end-to-end IP data capability for real-time applications including smart metering, SCADA, monitoring and other infrastructure telemetry solutions.  Planned for launch in Q1 2012, Inmarsat will target the low-cost M2M service at the utilities, oil & gas, and retail banking markets.

"We believe there is significant appetite in a number of markets globally for a low-cost stable platform to support short-burst data and the increased connectivity needed in fixed monitoring applications," said Drew Brandy, Director of Land Services at Inmarsat.  "A specific opportunity we will target is the smart grid initiative in the energy sector, with its requirement for data connectivity and information sharing across widely dispersed infrastructures.  But there are a number of other markets with a similar need for IP-based real-time cost-effective visibility across their operations."

"BGAN has already proven itself as a high-quality and reliable service, with high-availability via the global Inmarsat-4 network, and we feel it will offer an attractive solution for a range of M2M requirements," he said.

"Hughes is proud to be selected by Inmarsat to develop the new 9502 BGAN M2M terminal, building on our successful 9201-M2M product," said Graham Avis, vice president and general manager of Hughes San Diego. "The combination of reliable connectivity to unattended remote sites, a global service area, and an end-to-end IP based data path makes this an ideal solution for a wide array of machine-to-machine communication needs."

Hughes has been a developer and manufacturer of terminals for the award-winning BGAN service since its launch in 2005, with several successful portable and vehicular models in its portfolio.
