Samsung Launches Major Digital Health Initiative
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today launched a bold initiative aimed at directing the resources and innovation of the global technology industry toward empowering individuals to better manage their own health and wellness.
The Samsung Digital Health Initiative is based on open hardware and software platforms that will accelerate the development of advanced sensors, algorithms, and data collection and analysis.
At an event at San Francisco’s SFJAZZ Center today, Samsung’s Strategy and Innovation Center (SSIC) team demonstrated its open platform in a wearable wristband form factor, showing how devices based on this reference-design “blueprint” could be used to track measurements such as heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure. The company also demonstrated its open software architecture and how it could be used to collect data from a variety of sources, aggregate it and display it in a format allowing consumers to better understand what is taking place within their bodies.
The open platforms, combined with agreements like the one recently announced by Samsung and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to validate new technologies for personal health and wellness, are designed to help entrepreneurs bring innovative products to market more quickly.

Technology Highlights
Open Hardware Platform: Samsung’s Simband is an open hardware reference design for wearable technology, capable of integrating the most advanced sensing technologies in the world. Simband is being designed in a modular way, allowing for innovation in areas like battery life, form factor and noninvasive sensor technology. Innovators are invited to use the reference platform to create and contribute their own advanced sensors, algorithms and other technologies. Simband is a reference design Samsung and third-parties will use to develop products. It will not be sold commercially. This approach is intended to lead to the creation of ecosystems for hardware and algorithms that will enable new technology to be easily incorporated into finished products.
Open Software Architecture: The Samsung Architecture for Multimodal Interactions (SAMI) will be a cloud-based open software platform capable of bringing together diverse data from a variety of sources for analysis. It will allow devices and sensors to securely store data in the cloud regardless of the source’s format or structure. SAMI’s job is to make more information available, to break open information silos and give applications and services access to large amounts of data to provide better insights. Under Samsung’s approach, SAMI will allow data to be controlled by the individual generating it and not by third-parties, so that personal health data can be better protected.
The combination of Simband-designed sensor technologies and algorithms and SAMI-based software will take individual understanding of the body to a new level – for the first time giving voice to a deeper understanding of personal health and wellness. In addition, through the development of new sensing technologies and software, it’s possible that entirely new and previously unimagined insights into health and wellness could be generated.

To support its Digital Health Initiative, Samsung today also announced the Samsung Digital Health Challenge, a $50 million investment fund dedicated to innovative start-ups and technologies in the digital health area. The goal of the fund is to stimulate creative new approaches to digital health and Samsung’s open platforms. The Internet of Pigs is set to fly
1248 Internet of Things technology helps General Alert improve animal health and provide early warning of disease.
General Alert (GA), a pioneer in the use of sensors and monitoring technology on farms, is working with Internet of Things (IoT) specialist 1248 to improve the welfare of pigs, poultry and other livestock and provide early warning of transmitted diseases. GA is using 1248’s new Geras IoT database and publishing solution to collect data from multiple sensors including temperature, drinking water flow and animal feed rate, humidity, CO2 concentration, ammonia and pH. GA even uses in-vivo RFID and temperature tags planted in pigs, effectively turning a pig into a ‘thing’ on the Internet of Things.
This will be the first time agricultural environments and the behaviour of animals have been measured on this scale and in such detail, to manage productivity, health and wellbeing and improve operational efficiency. And by monitoring on a national and international level, the technology will be able to provide early warning of diseases such as foot-and-mouth, which can cause devastating livestock and financial loss.
Like most Internet of Things solutions, the GA system uses a very large number of sensors, each collecting thousands or millions of readings via the mobile phone network or internet, which need to be stored and queried to provide meaningful and useful information. For example, a change in drinking behaviour could indicate illness or source of animal stress that can be resolved quickly.
“Rising global population and standards of living are increasing the pressure on food-animal production, which leads to an increased requirement to manage animal productivity, health and wellbeing effectively,” said Chris Dodge, IT Director at General Alert.
“Sensors, electronics and communications technologies have reached a price point that is making it possible to deploy IoT systems that deliver real commercial benefit and Geras is a core building block of our solution. We are already working closely with veterinary, agricultural research and farm management companies and looking to expand the range of applications.”

UK Consortium announces an open access, city scale Internet of Things network in Milton Keynes
A consortium of leading technology companies¹, including Neul and BT, have announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to build a city-wide, open access demonstration network for Machine to Machine (M2M) communications and the Internet of Things (IoT), based on the Weightless™ communications standard.
The project will demonstrate the ability of a city-wide M2M infrastructure to cope with a large number of static and mobile sensors. Some of these will support use cases for Milton Keynes council, but the mission for the project is to attract many other innovators to use the infrastructure as a test bed for commercial applications, new products and services which need not be specific to Milton Keynes.
The technology is being supplied and managed by BT and Neul Ltd. Working with Milton Keynes Council, they will install a network of Weightless™ base stations to provide coverage across the city for low power, connected sensors.

“We see this exciting project as a means of establishing an open innovation environment to support the creation of M2M and IoT applications across a whole city. This could include anything from intelligent monitoring of parking spaces in the city to networked bins which signal when they need collecting.”

The collaboration will deploy large numbers of IoT sensors over its eighteen month span as well as proving a range of different business models in a real world environment. It is intended that it will remain as a long term development environment and platform for IoT innovation, attracting global companies to Milton Keynes.

Mobile Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Module Market Nearly Doubling to $2.9 Billion by 2018

As part of its One Stop. One Shop. strategy, Telit Competence Centers play a critical role in offering M2M design, development and integration assistance to customers worldwide. The main objective of the Competence Center is to identify and execute designs for specific customer applications based on Telit technologies.
With more than 30 years’ experience in wireless product design, LS Research offers comprehensive development and compliance testing services – addressing the technical challenges adopters often face in the critical pre-commercial state of the project, through expertise in antenna design and tuning, regulatory and carrier certifications, and embedded software.
